Ecodesign, integration and characterization of secondary biodegradable batteries (EDNA)

MCIN/AIE, PID2022-139250OB-C31

From: 09/2023 to: 08/2026

Coordinator: Juan Pablo Esquivel

Budget: 162.500 Euro

Project description:

The objective of project EDNA  is the ecodesign, integration and characterization of biodegradable secondary batteries. EDNA plans to implement a tailor-to-the-application strategy, meaning that the developed batteries’ life cycle will be coupled with the device they are powering, i.e. devices for precision agriculture. In this sense, the batteries will be designed, prototyped and tested according to the requirements of agricultural applications, adapting the energy and power requirements; and hence, the type and amount of materials. Furthermore, EDNA will ensure the implementation of cost and energy-efficient manufacturing methods and will validate the suitability for decentralized battery production, thus minimizing the environmental impact associated to the manufacturing life cycle stage.

Project EDNA leverages the complementary expertise of EDGY and research groups from 2 universities (UAB, UPV/EHU) and the technological center (Gaiker).

Project highlights

  • Na-ion batteries ecodesigned for precision agriculture

  • Batteries could be included in currently established composting waste streams

  • New solutions to the energy challenging requirements imposed by PA applications
